Family Life

I was watching our family interact yesterday and was amazed at how much time we really do spend together.

My Husband and Daughter were sitting in the middle of the floor playing with building blocks and having a great time doing it. I wondered how many 9.5 year old's were playing with their Dad in the middle of the floor and enjoying every second of it. Most of the kids I see at that age are out trying to see what they can destroy and how much trouble they can get into. Parents are the enemy and peers are the heroes. I thank God every day that our child actually likes our company.

Our Daughter has a lot of friends that think like she does which is fantastic but we have had our share of lemons too. Last Summer we had a new family move into the neighbourhood. There were two girls. One a little older than our Daughter and one the same age. Everything was going well until one day the girls decided that breaking the rules was the way to go. Our Daughter knew it was wrong but peer pressure won out and she ended up grounded for the day. A few days later the same girls decided that painting pictures on the side of our house way the thing to do. Again our Daughter let them do it because she wanted to " be liked ". That was the end of that friendship and the amazing part is it was our Daughters decision. She didn't like being in trouble.

I watch these same girls run around the neighbourhood with no supervision. Their parents are never home and these children are left to wander around aimlessly. It breaks my heart to see this knowing that our Daughter always has her parents and is quite happy knowing that.

Homeschooling has been good to our family and I hope when our Daughter is 18 we still have the same wonderful close relationship that we have now. The odds are in our favour.
